A large collection containing business and personal materials from the Van Alstyne, Schemerhorn and Fitch families. The personal materials include family letters of Sarah Fitch, Van Alstyne family genealogical notes, letters to John Van Alstyne, and family items such as church bulletins, newspapers and various family land papers. The bulk of the collection consists of business materials relating to Van Alstyne's various mercantile operations. Included are correspondence from customers to the firm; receipts for items purchased; delivery notices; lists of items shipped via sloop; orders for goods; promissory notes; and a number of statements of account for persons doing business with the merchants. The collection includes over eighty individual books of account. These volumes include journals, ledgers, wastebooks, subsidiary journals and ledgers for commodities such as beef and corn, memoranda books and day books. The various account books contain information on items sold and purchased, the status of individual accounts, income and expenditures of the store and a variety of other data, including information on particular items purchased.

John J. Van Alstyne was a merchant in Rensselaer County. He formed business partnerships with Edward Fitch and Jacob Schemerhorn. The three men were also related through marriage between the families. The mercantile firm dealt largely in commodities such as beef, corn and pork, but also sold other items found in most mercantile establishments, including cloth, hardware and other supplies.
